On Tuesday evening at dinner, Susan asked, âSo what are we going to do about Thanksgiving this year?â
Randy had been watching Susan closely ever since heâd intercepted the letter from the pastor. If anything, she seemed steadier, calmer, warmer toward him, more resolved. For dinner she had made spaghetti, which she knew he loved, and sheâd called âhelloâ when heâd come in the door. At the beginning of dinner, she told Lukas to tell his daddy about the project he had finished at school that day. And then, Susanâs question.
âWhy are you asking me?â he said. âI donât even know when it is.â
âRandy. Itâs two days from now.â
âSo?â
âSo, itâs a holiday. People have talked about it at work, havenât they?â
Randy hated it when Susan talked to him like this, like he had no idea what was going on, especially because most of the time he didnât. âYeah, Suzy,â he said. âWeâve been discussing our holiday plans over tea and crumpets.â
âYou havenât talked about it? At all?â Her voice was unbelieving.
âIâm sure itâs the same as any other year. We can take the day off for holiday pay, or we can work it for time and a half.â
âSo?â
âSo what?â
âSo what are you going to do?â Susanâs tone told Randy what an annoyance he was. His arms strained, and his chest tightened.
âWhyâs it matter?â he said.
She fixed him with a look. âBecause I need to tell my mom whoâs going to be there. And I thought, if you werenât working, maybe we could invite your dad again.â
âGreat,â Randy said.
âWhat?â
It was Randyâs turn to send Susan a look.
âHeâs getting older, Randy. Heâs not going to be around forever.â
âThereâs a tragedy.â
âRandy, Iâm trying to do the right thing. I donât want to spend time with him any more than you do. But heâs lonely. Heâs old and alone, and heâs lonely.â
âHe should be. Heâs earned it.â
âRandy, are you going to work that day or not?â
âIf those are my only options, Iâll work.â
âI didnât say we had to invite your dad.â
âHanging out with your dadâs not much better.â
âWhat choice do I have?â Susan pushed back her chair and began slamming plates into a stack. Willa jerked her head at Lukas, and they scampered off toward their bedroom.
A little flame of fear leaped up inside Randy and began to burn. Ever since heâd read the letter, heâd been afraid of Susanâs anger, of going too far. He pushed down his fear and said what he most wanted to say anyway. âWell, I do have a choice. And Iâm going to work.â
